Amanda Miller

Edit

Amanda Miller was a dancer with the Pennsylvania Ballet from 1993 to 2002, and an original founder and co artistic director of Phrenic New Ballet until its transition into two companies in late 2004, when she founded Miro Dance Theatre with fellow Phrenic Director Tobin Rothlein. She has choreographed works for Phrenic New Ballet, Bryn Mawr College, Singing City, SharpWire, The Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Shut Up and Dance, and Newtown Dance Repertory Company. Miller’s performance experience includes world premieres by Dwight Rhoden, Jorma Elo, Doug Elkins, Matthew Neenan, Meredith Rainey and Eva Gholson, and has allowed her the opportunity to work with Alonzo King, Trey McIntyre and Lar Lubavitch.  Her choreographic collaborations include work with Paul Struck and Matthew Neenan.

Miller’s film experience includes choreography and principal performer credits in the short films, Invisible and Swan, and numerous film and dance performance collaborations with dance film artist Tobin Rothlein.  Miller worked on M. Night Shyamalan’s  latest feature film, Signs. as a principal stunt performer.  This work drew on her background in dancing and acting improvisation to create a silent animated (CGI) character. Miller has studied acting and painting to further enhance her performance ability.

While a dancer and student with the Hartford Ballet from 1989-1993, Ms. Miller learned the benefits of having a diverse background.  The company’s repertoire consisted of the Balanchine classics as well as the Limón-inspired creations of the company director Micheal Uthoff. As a student she also learned the techniques of Bourneville and Graham and spent summers studying at Pacific Northwest Ballet School and at the Chautauqua Institute. Miller has studied the choreographic and improvisational techniques of Alonzo King, and most recently, the choreographic methods of choreographer Siobhann Davies, with whom she will continue to work throughout the coming year.
